Christmas Tree Safety Tips
With the holidays right around the corner, it is the best time to pick out the perfect Christmas tree to make your home feel and look more festive. While a Christmas tree will add holiday cheer to your home, it can also cause a serious safety hazard. Keep these Christmas tree safety tips in mind to ensure your tree does not ruin your holiday.
- Choose a tree that has fresh, green needles. If the needles fall off when you touch the tree, choose a different tree.
- Cut 2 inches off of the bottom of your tree before you place it in the stand to help it soak up water better. Add water each day to your tree stand to keep the tree alive for as long as possible.
- Keep the tree at least three feet away from any heat sources, including radiators, fireplaces, heat vents, candles, and lights.
- Do not place your tree in front of an exit to ensure that you can get out in case of an emergency in your house.
- Lights are either rated for indoor or outdoor use, not for both. Make sure to only use lights that are rated for indoor use when decorating your tree.
- Inspect each sting of lights before putting them on your tree. Throw out any lights that are frayed or have loose connections.
- Never use a lit candle to decorate your tree. If you like the look of candles on your tree, use a battery operated candle.
- Before you go to bed at the end of the night make sure that all of the lights on your tree are turned off.
