Summer Garden Tips
No matter if you have a yard, garden, or green roof, adding a little greenery to your home can be a great way to fully enjoy your home. While you may assume that any gardening you do is good for the environment, it can actually be hurting more than helping. Keep these summer garden tips in mind to ensure that your garden is as eco-friendly as possible.
- Choose the right plants – always look for native plants for your garden. Plants that are native to the area are already acclimated to the environment, which helps to cut down on the amount of water and pesticides you have to use to keep them looking their best.
- Consider the maintenance – instead of putting all of your clippings and trimmings in the trash, where they will emit harmful gases as they decompose, start a compost pile. Not only will a compost pile help you cut down on your waste, but it will also provide a free source of natural fertilizer to use throughout your garden.
- Irrigation – overwatering your plants is not only a waste of water, but it can also kill your plants. Install a drip irrigation system if possible to help make sure that your plants are getting the right amount of water every day. Also, make sure that you do not water your plants if there is a chance of rain in the near future.
- Avoid pesticides – before pesticides were invented, there were various bugs that ate the pests that kill gardens. Luckily, many of those bugs still exist, such as ladybugs, hoverflies, and lacewings. Instead of spraying pesticides throughout your garden, let some of these bugs loose in your garden to get the job done naturally.
