Keeping Your Child Healthy While Away At College

College Student Health Insurance

As your child gets settled into college, it is the perfect time to make sure that they are protected with the right insurance policies. With late nights studying and close quarters with their roommates, it is not uncommon for college students to get sick within the first couple months of school. Checking your health insurance coverage can help to ensure that your child has the right amount of coverage throughout the school year.

Under the Affordable Care Act, children who are under the age of 26 can stay on their parent’s health insurance policy if they do not have their own coverage. Typically, this is the best option since employer-based health insurance is generally more comprehensive than what they could get on their own.

If your child is moving to a different state for college, make sure to check if there are any qualified providers in the area. If they are not in the network, you may have to pay much higher deductibles and co-insurance to cover any treatments that they need.

If your child is going to school outside of your network area, you may want to consider getting them a policy through the school. More than half of the colleges throughout the country offer health plans for full-time students with very low annual premiums. These policies work best for handling the flu and immunizations, but may not be able to provide enough coverage for large medical issues.

Another option is a catastrophic health insurance plan which will provide coverage for big medical issues, but may not work well if your child is constantly going to the doctors for a cold.
