Inspect and Replace Your Car’s Windshield Wiper Blades

Learn how to change your windshield wiper blades when it’s time to replace.

While most people don’t give their windshield wipers a second thought, they work hard to help you drive safely. To ensure that you stay safe this winter, make sure you know how to inspect and replace your windshield wiper blades.

Inspection

Generally speaking, there is no hard rule for when you should replace your windshield wiper blades. That’s why it’s important to inspect them and check their condition every once in a while. For instance, if you notice that the blades aren’t making contact with your windshield, or if they are squeaking, streaking, skipping, or scratching your windshield, then they need to be replaced. Follow the instructions below to properly replace your old blades.

Replacing

1) Measure

You should measure your windshield wiper blades and consult your car’s owner’s manual to make sure that you are using the right sized blades for your car.

2) Remove Old Blade

To remove your old blade, gently pull your wiper arm off your windshield. Then, press the small tab on the underside of the wiper arm. Hold down this tab as you slide the old blade off the arm in a downwards movement. Repeat this process for the other wiper.

3) Attach New Blade

To attach the new blade, slide the blade onto the wiper arm. There should be a soft clicking sound when the blade locks into place. Once the blade is secured, lower the wiper arm so that the blade is in contact with your windshield. Complete this process for your other wiper,

4) Test

Finally, make sure that you test your new blades. Your windshield wipers should clear away water and debris without leaving any streaks or scratches on your windshield. Once you are satisfied with how your windshield wipers are performing, then you’re all set to go!
