Don’t Let Your Pipes Freeze and Burst

Prevent frozen and burst pipes this October.

Fall and winter in New York can mean pretty extreme temperatures. Unfortunately, when temperatures drop, this can leave your home’s pipes vulnerable to freezing over and bursting. As burst pipes can lead to extensive damages to your home, you should do everything in your power to protect your pipes. Here are some of the precautions you can take.

1) Circulate Warm Air

To take care of the pipes inside your home, make sure that you leave your thermostat set to at least 55° F, even if there’s no one home. To facilitate the circulation of this warm air, open up the doors inside your home, including all cabinet doors in your bathrooms and kitchen. This will allow the warm air to wrap around the piping concealed behind your cabinetry.

2) Keep Water Moving

Another way to prevent your pipes from bursting is by keeping the water inside them moving. The best way to accomplish this is by leaving all the faucets and taps inside your home to drip slightly.

3) Insulate Other Pipes

While leaving the heater on will take care of the pipes inside your home, you also have to take care of the pipes in your garage, attic, or basement. To protect the pipes in your garage, keep your garage door closed as much as possible to prevent the freezing air from invading the space. To protect the pipes in your basement and attic, the best solution is to speak to a contractor about adding extra insulation to these areas of your home.

These are some of the precautions that you take to protect your pipes when temperatures drop. Want another way to take care of your home this fall? Then make sure you have the right homeowners insurance protections in place. For assistance with your home coverage needs, contact the experts at Robert J.
